WHAT’S HAPPENING

We've had a full, productive week in Spain at the Open Government Partnership Global Summit, co-hosting conversations, meeting new friends and collecting strong ideas for enhancing youth participation.

In our session on how to build a dynamic youth participation culture, participants ...shared that it was inappropriate to continue talking about 'youth issues' in countries where the majority of the population was under 35.
We also heard ideas for moving beyond tokenistic representation and ensuring young people experienced proximity to governance and transparency within governance processes to build their confidence to engage.

Seydina Issa Laye Sambe, the inspiring young mayor of Yoff, Senegal, shared about his program of hiring 25 and 26-year-olds, allowing them to be in charge of projects both to build their confidence and to show older people in his office what they are capable of.

At a round table on the future of open government, AL Co-CEO Blair Glencorse spoke about the need to move from projects to ecosystems and from isolated to collective narratives as they relate to open governance. We were also excited to celebrate the OGP Awards, highlighting the best OGP challenge commitments from around the world at the national and local levels - everything from participatory budgeting to anti-corruption.

The Summit closed with an address from His Majesty the King of Spain, who reaffirmed that open government was critical to strengthening democracy and rebuilding trust.
