A resilient civil society can be sustained through an ecosystem rooted in community generosity that... is amplified by genuine global partnerships and powered by trust and accountability.
These were some of the heartening takeaways from a conversation we co-hosted with GivingTuesday about "Alternative Revenue and Funding Streams", especially in the wake of aid cuts, shrinking funding and shrinking civic space.
💸 Everyone's a philanthropist
The global civil society sector is a $3.5T+ ecosystem. But all grants, government and foundation assistance – before cuts to Official Development Assistance (ODA) – add up to between 500 and 600 billion in a given year. This means civil society is overwhelmingly supported by individual giving.
🏺 The Global South is Leading with Indigenous Models
In Africa & Latin America generosity is a cultural practice. Surveys show a high percentage of African CSOs cite individuals as a top funding source. Add to that donations in kind such as services, support and other resources that fall within this type of generosity, the number shoots even higher.
🧾 How to be accountable to those we're creating change for
The call is for international foundations to shift from being agenda-setters to enablers. This means providing patient, flexible capital, offering matching grants to incentivize local fundraising, and investing in the infrastructure and research that makes local resource mobilization sustainable.
🏗️ How to build trust with those who give back locally
Digital platforms have unlocked incredible scale for individual giving. Donar Online Donar Online reports that of 600,000 individual donors over the last 10 years, 95% donated to local causes. By addressing the barrier of donor trust of online platforms, individual donation platforms can unlock even greater local giving.
Thank you to all who joined and shared such thoughtful and thought-provoking data, observations and stories.

developmentgateway.org🚀 Introducing the HackCorruption Civic Tech Tools Repository!
We’re thrilled to ...launch this open-source collection of impactful, scalable digital solutions to fight corruption. Together with Development Gateway, we’ve supported teams worldwide to design, refine, and apply tech solutions tackling systemic corruption.
Along the way, we noticed a common challenge: developers often spent valuable time searching for existing tools or open-source code that could help them build faster and smarter. This repository brings those resources together, making it easier to share knowledge, reuse code, and build on each other’s work.
We invite developers and others working on anti-corruption tech to contribute their tools and code. We envision this resource as a catalyst for the collaboration needed to drive change and curb corruption.

AL's Senior Non-Resident Fellow, Jennifer Anderson Lewis, employed and evaluated multiple ...anti-corruption strategies during her career, leading USAID's efforts as a former Senior Anti-Corruption Advisor. She shares that the most effective ways of combating transnational corruption involve investing in people, platforms, and coalitions. "In a world where corruption continues to drain the resources of the developing world, where illicit financial outflows dwarf official development assistance by seven to ten times, donors cannot afford to continue to treat anti-corruption as a sectoral governance concern. In USAID’s wake, donors must keep the steady drumbeat of anti-corruption front and centre, across global policy dialogues, country strategies, sectoral programs, and funding decisions," she shares in this new article for Alliance magazine.
