🇿🇼 Human rights are the foundational principles upon which governance systems are built. And ...if human rights are not practiced, how can good governance thrive?

At a "Human Rights In Accountability Narratives" workshop, Accountability Lab Zimbabwe staff, alumni, and partners met to explore how best to incorporate human rights principles into programming.

Programme Manager at the Democracy and Civic Engagement Unit of the University of Pretoria, Bonolo Makgale asked the question: "Under what conditions can accountability flourish in modern democracies?"

Throughout the day, a wide range of guests sought to answer this question within the framework of 'human rights as a basis for governance and accountability'. This included insightful commentary on the importance of beginning with civic education when approaching communities rather than immediately imposing rights on them, as well as how the personal and political are intricately connected. By educating citizens first, human rights can be aligned with personal principles which can later manifest in political action.

The Lab's HackCorruption team was in Jakarta, Indonesia, this past weekend as teams finalized ...their objectives and milestones for the next six months. They are now eligible for seed funding of up to $10,000 - based on how successfully the teams meet the development milestones they set for themselves.

Participants had the opportunity to pitch their anti-corruption tools to an expert panel of Indonesian mentors, gaining valuable insight into some of the critical success factors necessary for the context. Mentors including former IMB Country Manager Betti Alisjahbana, Jan Ramos Budaya Pandia of HukumOnline, Wana Alamsyah of Indonesia Corruption Watch, anti-corruption technical specialist Heriyono Anggoro, and Dessy Pramita of Koalisi Anti-Korupsi Indonesia, also offered pointers on how teams could strengthen their elevator pitches.

They are now working with a team of experts over the next few months to bring their solutions to fruition! We look forward to bringing you updates about the progress they make.

Teams include Lexicon BO which is working on beneficial ownership transparency, Voices4Budget which is opening up data regarding village budgets, Carbonitor which is working to prevent corruption in carbon offset projects, and Land Looters which is tackling illicit land grabbing. Teams are working across Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.

The program is supported by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement at the U.S. Department of State and the USAID Countering Transnational Corruption Grand Challenge for Development. The Lab is implementing HackCorruption in partnership with the Center for International Private Enterprise and Development Gateway: An Irex Venture.

⚡️ Winners from our last Hackcorruption event are touching down in Indonesia this week for a ...3-day bootcamp! They'll be working together to present how far they've come and improve their anti-corruption tech tools.

In anticipation of this week's bootcamp, we caught up with one of last year's winning teams from Paraguay to hear about the progress of their procurement data tool, Keyping.

Keyping decodes public procurement data to provide access to citizens, journalists, researchers, and government leaders. Since Hackcorruption Colombia last year the team has been building on their visualizations and cleaning and adding data from multiple Central and South American countries. So far the team has integrated data from Paraguay and will soon add Peru, Panama, and Guatemala. They hope to add Colombia and Mexico as well as internationally sanctioned companies and individuals.

The team is most excited about the progress of the tool's visualizations, which makes it easier for users to spot anomalies and red flags in the procurement process.

"We haven't found a site that integrates all the data in the same place. It's difficult to do, but worth it. You can find the person, the entities, the sanctions against the person, the procurement of that person. All the information about that one person on one site"

Congratulations to Rodrigo Villalba, Karen Riveros, and Beatriz Vierci on their incredible progress.

We can't wait to see what this week's bootcamp brings!
