Accountability Lab launches Civic Charge: An Accelerator for Social Accountability Change Agents

When Accountability Lab started more than 11 years ago, the need to cultivate and equip reformers pushing for social accountability in their communities and countries formed part of the organization’s DNA. This quickly led to the creation of the Accountability Incubator, which has provided training and support to over 300 young change-makers across 12 countries over the past decade. Having incubated various accountability-related projects, we’ve gained a lot of insight into the needs of the innovators in our incubators, and we have used those learnings to create Civic Charge: An Accelerator for Social Accountability Change Agents. Applications are open here [...]

“If it doesn’t work the first time, you can always try again”

Written by Opeyemi Omiwale When I discovered Accountability Lab, I was fascinated by the work they were doing. As an international student from Nigeria studying Economics in the United States, I was always interested in corruption and its impact on the economies of developing countries. One of the things that always bugged me was not knowing how to tackle the issues of corruption in developing countries practically.  As I read about Accountability Lab, I knew then that I wanted to work there. After graduating with my undergraduate degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, I applied [...]

This year, the 77 accountapreneurs enrolled in our [...]

The Value of Translocal Networks

Written by Director for Growth and Operations, Jean Scrimgeour   The Accountability Lab (AL) started to demonstrate how governance can work for people by supporting creative solutions for accountability. Nine years later, the Lab has developed into a network of 9 country teams, 5 additional country partners and almost 110 team members. But AL is not, nor was it ever intended to be, an international non-government organisation (INGO).   Instead, we see ourselves as a translocal network, a collective of local organisations that have a shared purpose and understanding about the challenges we face and what we believe are the creative [...]

(Ad)venturing to New Places

Starting a new Accountability Lab - the example of South Africa Many have asked us how we started working in the countries in which we work. To begin with, there were strategic reasons, like knowledge of the context, good networks and trusted partners. But over the years we have become more organized in our approach to growth (see our country selection matrix). Now with almost weekly requests to start working in new and exciting places we have started to think about - and operationalise - a more structured approach to scale. When deciding to work in a new country we [...]

Integrity Icon (II) is Accountability Lab’s flagship program aimed at ‘naming and faming’ honest civil servants who are pushing for good governance reforms in systems that are widely known for corruption. Now in its fifth year, the campaign fosters long term shifts in narratives and works to change norms through public engagement. It also seeks to impact process and policy change by supporting and connecting  dedicated civil servants. Each year, 5 Integrity Icons are chosen through public nominations and organisational vetting; celebrated through national and social media; and awarded at a final celebration attended by local and international stakeholders. The [...]
