Practical Ways CSOs Can Manage Closing Civic Space

Civic space has been closing everywhere for a long time - from the UK to Mexico to Zimbabwe - and represents, along with the corruption that accompanies it, one of the biggest threats to democracy everywhere. For citizens, and particularly for those of us interested in free, open societies, this can be an existential threat - not a day passes without protesters being killed, journalists going missing or activists being murdered. For a translocal network like Accountability Lab this is also a question of survival, so we are doing everything we can to understand how we can proactively manage the [...]

Road to Riyadh – Can the G20 Fight Corruption?

The G20 places an important emphasis on anti-corruption - but has a long way to go to understand the progress it is making on these issues; · Information is outdated, commitments can be vague, measurement is confused and tracking progress is difficult; · It is difficult to even understand what commitments have been made - check out Accountability Lab’s analysis here; · Going forwards the G20 should commit to very specific, simple commitments, proactive monitoring and greater transparency of its own processes. By Blair Glencorse & Sanjeeta Pant Background During the Toronto Summit in 2010, the G20 agreed to set up [...]

To Whom Much Is Given – National Accountability Stewardship and the Role of Public Servants

The greatest enemy of accountability is impunity, the feeling that you are doing the public a favour and do not owe them any explanations. If the politician and the public servant are to win the trust of the public, this is something that must change. To whom much is given, much is expected. By Dr. Joe Abah. For clarity, it is always prudent to start with a definition of terms, particularly as some terms that are presumed to mean the same things to everybody could actually mean different things to different people. There are many definitions of the word “Accountability.” [...]

By: Blair Glencorse, Executive Director There was plenty of irony in the fact that Transparency International’s (TI) flagship meeting- the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC)- took place in Malaysia last week during the largest ever protests against corruption in the country’s history. The Prime Minister perhaps sensibly stayed away from the meeting in the end, but Jose Ugaz, the President of TI, certainly wasn’t going to let him get away that easily, asking publicly in the opening session: “Who paid the money and why? Where did it go?” This set the tone- there was a refreshing directness and focus at the [...]
